Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when one text uses another and are linked together in some way this could be a music video and a movie whether it be a pastiche which copies scene for scene or a parody a remake of a music video that is exaggerated in an attempt to be humorous.

An example would be the Rizzle Kicks video Lost Generation. Intertextuality is used in this video by incorporating the Britain's Got Talent buzzer and also the use of TV shows such as Jeremy Kyle and Big Brother. It is clear in this video that one form of media is being presented in another way.

Auteur Theory

Autuer Theory states that the director has full control over a music video, deciding everything. This will reflect the directors personal creativity.  A few examples of Autuer directors are Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Chris Milk, Michel Gondry and Eric Wareheim. These directors sometimes include themselves in the video in some way, this could be through a picture on the wall or to being an extra in the background.

Take Michel Gondry for example, his music videos are very repetitive and use long takes as seen in the image below. This music video starts with Kylie Minoque walking in the streets in a way that she walks in a circle and returns to the same location at the beginning of the video where there ends up being two of her. I have also included the full music video if you would like to see more of Michel Gondry' directing.
